Public Transport Guide

What is HSL?

HSL (Helsingin seudun liikenne) is Helsinki’s unified public transit authority. Instead of dealing with different companies for different modes of transport, HSL connects the entire capital region under one single network.

With a single HSL ticket, you can seamlessly hop between:

  • 🚇 The Metro (connecting east to west)
  • 🚃 The Trams (the main way to glide through the city center)
  • 🚌 All Buses (including the orange trunk lines)
  • 🚄 Commuter Trains (your link to the airport and northern suburbs)
  • 🚢 The Suomenlinna Ferry (the municipal boat to the fortress island)

It is fast, clean, runs completely on time, and makes owning a car in Helsinki entirely unnecessary.

1. Get the HSL App First

Do not hunt for paper ticket machines. Before you leave the airport terminal, download the official HSL App on your smartphone. It is available in English, links directly to your credit card or Apple/Google Pay, and functions as both your route planner and your ticket wallet.

⚠️ Important: You must purchase your ticket before stepping onto a vehicle or entering the metro platform area. Drivers do not sell tickets, and the fine for riding without a valid ticket is €100 plus the price of the ticket.

2. Understand the Travel Zones (A, B, C, D)

The transit network is divided into four concentric circular zones. As a visitor or new resident, you only need to remember two simple combinations:

Ticket TypeZones IncludedWhere it covers
AB TicketZones A and BEntire City Center. Covers all central neighborhoods (Kamppi, Kallio, Punavuori, Töölö), central hotels, major sights, and the Suomenlinna ferry.
ABC TicketZones A, B, and CAirport Transfer. You must buy an ABC ticket to travel between the Helsinki-Vantaan Airport (Zone C) and the City Center (Zone A).

3. The Airport to City Center Connection

Taking the train from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport to the main Central Railway Station (Rautatientori) is the fastest and cheapest transfer option.

1.Buy an ABC Ticket:Do this at the luggage carousel.

Open your HSL App and purchase a single ABC ticket. It stays valid for 90 minutes from the moment of purchase, giving you plenty of time to reach your destination.

2.Follow the Railway Signs:5-minute walk.

Walk out of the arrivals hall and follow the prominent overhead train icons down the long escalators into the underground airport station.

3.Board Train I or P:Platform doesn't matter.

Step onto either the I-Train or the P-Train. They run on a continuous loop in opposite directions—both will get you directly to the Central Railway Station in approximately 30 minutes.

4. Ticket Pricing Quick Guide

If you are staying for more than a couple of days, buying a Day Ticket or a Multi-Day Pass inside the app will save you significant money compared to individual single tickets.

  • Single AB Ticket: €3.10 (Valid for 80 minutes across all city transit)
  • Single ABC Ticket (Airport): €4.10 (Valid for 90 minutes)
  • 24-Hour AB Pass: €9.00 (Unlimited rides within the central city zones)
  • 3-Day AB Pass: €18.00
  • 7-Day AB Pass: €36.00

5. Local Transit Etiquette

  • Boarding Buses: Always enter through the front door and scan your app's QR code or physical transit card at the green reader machine next to the driver.
  • Boarding Trams, Metros, & Trains: Enter through any door. You do not need to scan your ticket or show anyone unless a roaming transit inspector asks to see it.
  • The Escalator Rule: When riding metro escalators, always stand on the right and walk on the left. Finns take this unwritten rule very seriously!
