Vibe: Nature, Garden

Hidden in northern Helsinki, the Malminkartano Apple Tree Garden (Malmink kartanon omenatarha) offers a sweet taste of the Finnish countryside right at the edge of the suburban rail line. With hundreds of trees, it stands as one of the city's most unique, aromatic public sanctuaries.

From Research Base to Public Bounty

The grounds began as a University of Helsinki agricultural research facility testing winter-hardy apple varieties. When the project ended, the city preserved the space as a public park. Today, the garden boasts 400 to 500 trees spanning dozens of unique domestic and Nordic heritage varieties.

What truly sets this orchard apart is its civic philosophy: the harvest belongs to everyone.

  • The Spring Blossom: In late May, the canopy explodes into a blanket of pink and white blossoms—a magnet for picnickers and photographers.
  • The Autumn Harvest: By September, branches droop with fruit. Locals arrive with bags and fruit-pickers, sharing ladders and collecting fresh apples completely free of charge.
